Freddie Hart contemplating another world.

FREDDIE HART

Freddie Hart says he got his first practical lesson in faith as a fifteen-year-old marine in World War II. “I guess you learn a whole lot about God when you’re in a war. You know, when trouble comes, that’s when people pray most of all. When you get scared, all you can look up to is God. If you don’t believe, then you’re in bad shape, my friend.”

Hart, who turned to making gospel music in semiretirement, doesn’t miss much about his days as a major recording act. “Number one on my hit parade is Jesus Christ. I wasn’t always a Christian, but I am now. I have contentment. You don’t get that feeling from fame or fortune. You always get it from Him.” Living in Burbank, California, the composer of “Trip to Heaven” (“I just took a trip to heaven, I didn’t even have to die”) has a special way of dealing with atheists. “I’ve gotten a hold of some people who didn’t believe. I’d get them in a car and go about a hundred miles an hour. Then, when I came close to something or other, they’d cry out, ‘Oh God!’

“I’d say, ‘What did you say?’

“When people are scared, the first thing they do is cry out for God. It’s an instinct.”
